Convocation Women Medical College Abbottabad

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor, Barrister Masood Kausar has said that the socio-economic indicators are considered the basic barometers to determine the quality of life which the citizens of any society enjoy across the world and being the developing nation we, despite hectic struggle and spending sufficient resources still have to go a long way to ensure desired standards particularly in respect of health and education

Addressing the First Convocation of the Women Medical College, Abbottabad; an institution working in the private sector on Tuesday, the Governor said, “to realize the dream of prosperous and developed Pakistan, we have no other choice but to shake off the slumbers of ignorance and to spread knowledge to every nook and corner of the country”.  The ceremony, vastly attended by educationists and elites of the town, besides parents of students and faculty members was also addressed by the Vice Chancellor of theKhyberMedicalUniversity, Prof. Dr. Hafeezullah and the Principal of the College, Prof. Dr. Zahir Shah.  In all 200 graduates of seven sessions; right from 2004 to 2010, Dr. Chaman Ara; Dr. Fatima Shahzadi and Dr. Muneera Naz were declared the extra best graduates for the sessions 2005; 2009 and 2010 respectively for achieving distinctive positions in all their respective annual examinations.  Similarly, Dr. Bushra Zafar, Dr. Zainab Qadir, Dr. Fakhira Naurin and Dr. Aneela Yasmeen were honoured with gold medals for being adjudged the best graduates of the sessions, 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2008 respectively.

Highlighting the importance of the quality of education, the Governor said, good teachers and institutions though matter a lot yet it is also the hard work which makes the success guaranteed and with this fact in mind, he added, the government is moving rapidly to realize maximum opportunities of better educational facilities to the young generation.   Referring to the role of private educational institutions in the promotion of higher learning, the Governor declared not to tolerate any compromise on quality of education at any cost.  “It is always my earnest effort to ensure justified and realistic working of private educational institutions strictly in accordance with the core spirit of the importance of the education and would try his best to avoid the practice of mere making the educational institutions as a source of earning, he said.

Congratulating the graduates, the Governor said, they are lucky for having studied in decent educational institutions but at the same time they should also be mindful of the fact they owe a lot to those fellow youngsters, who could not have access to opportunities of similar standards.  He advised the graduates to pay back to the suffering humanity, besides their families and the parent educational institutions by serving their profession with the spirit of humanity.  He particularly mentioned the importance of polio vaccination and urged the entire audience to keep a vigil eye in their surroundings and make sure that not a single child is deprived of polio drops in their influence.

He expressed deep pleasure over the vastly enhanced ratio of the girls students in the medical colleges, while paying rich tributes to Ex-Prime Minister of Pakistan, Shaheed Benazir Bhutto, said that she was the champion of the cause of women folk whose role will alwaysremained exemplary in this respect.  This, he added, has also discouraged the trends of gender discrimination which though exists as a social problem in our society tome some extent like elsewhere in the world yet the achievements to overcome them are also very appreciable.  The Governor expressed the hope that the lady doctors would opt for serving the people in the field of health rather shifting over their other priorities.

Earlier, the Vice Chancellor of the Khyber Medical University, Prof. Dr. Hafeezullah said that the Women Medical Colleges the leading institution in the private sector which has preferred their University to get its affiliation and with which its total strength of constituent as well as affiliated institutions have reached to 29.  The university, he added, is actively engaged to ensure better opportunities of learning and research to students of medical profession and for this purpose not only the examination system has been transformed in line with the present day needs but the curriculum is also being further developed.

Prof. Dr. Zahir Shah, Principal of the college welcoming the governor and the guests on this occasion said, that college started  about 12 years ago offers teaching and research facilities both in medical and dental streams which places it at the unique position amongst its sister institutions in the private sector.   Presently, he added, the students are availing clinical facilities in two teachings hospitals of the town while a purpose built teaching hospital of its own will be shortly launched.  Similarly, he added, a complete I.T. system is also being started shortly which will enable the students to avail the facilities of universally available digitized libraries.  Earlier, the governor gave away degrees and medals to the graduates.
